Would buying a refurbished mac laptop be a good idea?

Yeah, go for it, there's really no difference. A refurbished computer is just one that was leased for a period of time, and then given back when the lease was up. Apple then re-formats the computer and everything, so it's basically a brand new computer. They just can't legally sell it as 'new'.
